New data indicate newborn male circumcision may reduce STI transmission.
The Wall Street Journal (1/4, Goldstein) "Health Blog" reported that Johns Hopkins and NIH researchers, citing three randomized trials conducted in Africa, say that it may be time for the American Academy of Pediatrics to revise its stance on newborn male circumcision. At present, AAP maintains that there are not enough data about the procedure's risks and benefits. Now, the authors of the paper appearing in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine say AAP support may encourage state Medicaid programs to cover the procedure, which could drive ultimately lead to a decrease in sexually transmitted infections.
