Food Allergies and Social Isolation

Food allergies can be "socially isolating."

USA Today (1/7, Marcus) reports that for anyone "with food allergies or some other food limitations, dining out, eating in other people's homes, and munching at office parties and school events can be a minefield." Calman Prussin, a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases immunologist, said that "experts believe a growing number of Americans have food-related illnesses. ... Though the illnesses appear to be increasing, the trend may partly be the result of increased awareness and testing." Prussin says, "Having food allergies can be socially isolating," but USA Today notes coping strategies many use to overcome their allergies.
