Body mass index may be misleading indicator of women's health.
In a segment on NBC Nightly News (1/6, story 6, 2:30, Williams), NBC's chief medical editor Nancy Snyderman, MD, said that appearance or "body mass index, or BMI, can be very deceiving" when it comes to being indicative of overall health. Miami cardiologist Arthur Agigson was shown saying, "You can be overweight and very healthy, and you can be fairly thin, but have a relatively high percentage of body fat and be high risk for future heart attack and stroke." Dr. Snyderman added that BMI "doesn't distinguish the weight of dangerous body fat from fat-free mass like muscle and bone," which is why "many experts believe that more accurate measures of fitness should be used instead."
