NFL Concussion Issues

Follow-up hearing examines new concussion policies.

The New York Times (1/5, B11, Schwarz) reports that a six-hour hearing before the House Judiciary Committee regarding football injuries on Monday focused primarily "on the application of recently strengthened professional rules to amateur levels, from youth leagues to college programs." The hearing "was a follow-up gathering after a full hearing on Oct. 28 in Washington in which the NFL was criticized for its handling of brain injuries." Several organizations used the opportunity to list the actions they would be taking to address the issue, which included mandatory "concussion awareness" programs for coaches and new rules regarding permanently benching players who are knocked unconscious during a game.
