Denture Cream Alert
Overuse of denture products containing zinc may cause nerve damage.
WebMD (2/15, DeNoon) reported, "Many cases of mysterious nerve damage turn out to be caused by overuse of popular denture products, an increasing number of reports" suggest. For example, in 2007, an Italian researcher "suggested a link between denture products and nerve damage"; and in 2008, "Sharon Nations, MD, and colleagues at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center identified four patients for whom this was their main source of zinc." The zinc in "Fixodent and similar denture products may be the cause of the nerve damage," WebMD explained, because people who "get way too much zinc have dangerously low levels of copper." Moreover, zinc overdose "itself may be toxic."
