Depression and Heart Disease

Women who suffer from both depression and diabetes may face an increased risk of dying from heart disease.

The CNN (1/3) "The Chart" blog reported that "women who suffer from both depression and diabetes have a increased risk of dying from heart disease, as well as having a higher chance of dying over a six-year period, according to a newstudy " published in the Archives of General Psychiatry. Investigators "looked at more than 78,000 women between the ages of 54 and 79 who were participating in the famous Nurse's Health Study."
HealthDay (1/3, Reinberg) reported that "over six years of follow-up, 4,654 women died, including 979 who died of cardiovascular disease, the investigators found." The data indicated that "women who had diabetes had about a 35 percent increased risk of dying, and those with depression had about a 44 percent increased risk, compared with women with neither condition." Women "with both conditions had about twice the risk of dying, the study authors found." MedPage Today (1/3, Walsh) also covered the story.
